About the PTO

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PTO?

PTO stands for Parent-Teacher Organization. At Cove School, the PTO is made up of 100% volunteers. Every parent/guardian of a Cove School student is a member and can participate. There are no dues required.

How is the PTO organized?

The PTO is “run” by a group of elected officers called the Executive Board. All officers must be nominated (in April) and then elected at a general PTO meeting in May. In addition to the Executive Board, the PTO is comprised of many committees. Each September, your child will bring home a form where you can indicate your willingness to participate in a particular committee – or you may want to get involved anytime during the year! A list of PTO officers and committee chairs is attached.

How often does the PTO meet?

The PTO Executive Board generally meets 3-4 times during the school year, on a weekday evening.

General PTO meetings will be held 5 times this year (schedule attached) and are open to EVERYONE – parents and teachers alike! Meeting reminders are included in Principal’s FYI Notes, monthly school calendar and all-school notices.

What happens at a general PTO meeting?

Cove PTO meetings begin with social time and refreshments. Meetings generally include:

  • a treasurer’s report, explaining PTO funds how that money is being spent;
  • a report from our principal, Stacy Bucyk, followed by a brief question and answer period;
  • updates on activities, including field trips, arts and enrichment events, family fun events and fundraising activities.

Why should I get involved?

Cove PTO’s success is based on the strength of its volunteers. Parents are welcome in the school, and their support and assistance are sought in a variety of ways. When parents volunteer, both families and schools reap benefits that come in few other ways. Getting involved at any level is also a great way for parents to get to know other parents and staff.

How much time do I need to commit?

As much or as little as you are able. The Cove PTO consists of parents who work full-time inside and outside of the home. Some folks commit significant amounts of time to fundraising or other committee work while others get involved for a few hours on a discreet project, such as collecting and counting Box Tops for your child’s classroom. Any amount of time you can give is welcome and appreciated!

I work during the day, can I get involved?

Yes! Start by simply attending a PTO meeting!

Isn’t the PTO just fundraising?

No! While fundraising is an important part of what the PTO does, it is certainly not all the PTO does. Family fun nights, math and science nights, organizing the student-run Cove Chronicle newsletter, arts and enrichment programs such as Techsploration and the Mainely Stars Planetarium and Spring field day are all examples of non-fundraising events brought to you by the Cove PTO!
